Sevilla is the capital of Andalucia and the cultural and financial center of southern Spain.  Sevilla has just over 700,000 inhabitants in the city itself, and 1.6 million in the metropolitan area, making it Spain's 4th largest city. Sevilla has also been the capital of Spain but in the late 16th Century, Madrid took over, simply because Madrid  is located in the center of Spain.

Sevilla lies on the bank of the Guadalquir. The river can be navigated from Sevilla all the way to its outlet near Sanlúcar de Barrameda, on the Atlantic coast. In the past the port of Sevilla played an important role in commerce between Spain and the Americas and it remains today one of the most active ports of the Iberian peninsula.

Sevilla's cathedral is the largest Gotich building in the world and has a superb collection of art and period stonework. Christoffer Columbus is buried here. Of great importance is also the Alcázar, the palace fortress of the Arab kings and one of the finest examples of Mudéjar (Moorish) architecture.

There is nowhere else in Spain that complies so closely with the foreigner's perception of stereotypical Spain as Sevilla. The city is a center for flamenco, bullfighting and fiestas, especially during the Feria de Abril (2 weeks after Easter Sunday) when everyone seems to hit the street for a week long party.

Sevilla gets very hot in the summer, July is the warmest month with average maximum temperatures of 35.3C (96F) and extreme high temperatures at around 46C (116F). Spring and autumn are the best time to visit.
